I'm still replaying through the game after all these years so I'm taking in all the dialogue and journal entries. Maybe it is the Idol that awakens the Dark One and thus, was sent away to prevent that? The quiet area pass the Lvl 1 Graveyard mentioned that the people their worshipped the darkness and offered an Idol to it. The only thing I'm not sure about is how the Idol of Sorrow plays into this whole ordeal, like how it got out of the Ancient City in the first place. Using the sword of moonlight, you kill it and, from what I gather, end the darkness's reign and influence. Remember how you place the Idol and fall? I think you actually fall into it and the final level is actually inside it's body. In the end of the game, the thing you kill is the Dark One, who I believe is a physical being that is the darkness's manifestation, its way to consume everything, if you catch my meaning. Before they all perished, the Forest Folk sealed their city in an effort to contain the darkness from seeping out into the rest of the world.

This darkness was released by someone and it would eventually spread throughout the Ancient City, and to the forest above, consuming and cursing the Forest Folk. The ancient city was built on top of this underground area in order to contain this darkness. The people there sealed it in the cave which was also their home, leading to their demise. Over time, the darkness gained a will of it's own and desired to consume the world.

I believe that long ago, there was a darkness that people lived in It was a peaceful life.
